Newcastle have appointed Eddie Howe as new manager to replace Steve Bruce, who was sacked last month, making him the first permanent boss hired by the new PIF ownership.

Graeme Jones has been in charge on an interim basis for the last few weeks, overseeing 1-1 draws with both Crystal Palace and Brighton as well as a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.

The appointment of Howe marks a return to management for the 43-year-old, who had not held a position since leaving Bournemouth at the end of the 2019/20 season.

The club initially teased the deal on Twitter, posting the not-so-cryptic message of 'Howe's everyone's Monday going so far?', before the real deal came a few minutes later.

We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Eddie Howe as the club’s new head coach

"It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United," Howe said after signing a contract until 2024. "It is a very proud day for me and my family.

"This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players.

"I would like to thank the club's owners for this opportunity and thank the club's supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together."

Newcastle co-owner, Amanda Staveley added: "We have been incredibly impressed by Eddie through what has been a rigorous recruitment process.

"As well as his obvious achievements with AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformational impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about taking this team and club forward.

"He is a great fit for what we are trying to build here. We are delighted to welcome Eddie and his staff to St. James' Park and very much look forward to working together towards our collective ambitions."

Howe had first been put in charge of Bournemouth at the age of just 31, eventually securing promotions from League Two, League One and the Championship to make the Cherries a Premier League club for the first time ever in 2015.

Howe’s first task at Newcastle is keeping the struggling Magpies in the Premier League before attention can turn to the new ownership’s longer-term ambitions.
