Barcelona star Alexia Putellas could miss out on Euro 2022 after sustaining a knee sprain in training.
The 28-year-old Putellas is considered one of the best football players in the world.
After an astonishing treble-winning season with Barcelona, the Spaniard scooped the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year, Ballon d’Or, and The Best FIFA Women’s Player award, becoming the first player to win all three accolades in one year.
Putellas is also the bedrock of the Spanish national team, making a record 100 appearances for her country. She has played at two World Cups, as well as the Euros in 2013 and 2017.
But she could well miss out on Euro 2022 after picking up an injury in training. The news was announced on Twitter, with Putellas set to undergo medical tests to determine the extent of the injury.
Even a minor knee sprain can take up to six weeks to heal, and with Euro 2022 getting underway tomorrow, one of the tournament’s most prolific players is now a serious doubt.
Spain have been drawn in Group B alongside eight-time winners Germany, Denmark and Finland.
Their opening match is against Finland on Friday, with matches against Germany and Denmark scheduled for Tuesday July 12th and Saturday July 16th respectively.
The knockout stage then begins on July 20th, with the final set to take place at Wembley on July 31st.
Due to the success of Barcelona on the domestic stage, many have tipped Spain to go all the way at Euro 2022.
Even if Putellas does miss out, the team still boasts stars such as Irene Paredes, Aitana Bonmatí and Patricia Guijarro.
But Spain will be challenged by hosts England, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the defending champions Netherlands for the title.
