Inter Milan chiefs have supposedly performed a U-turn over their stance on re-signing Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgium international has failed to justify his £97.5m price tag during his first season back at Stamford Bridge and admitted in a controversial interview last year that he was pining for a return to San Siro.

However, Inter's volatile financial situation coupled with Lukaku's struggles for starts and form under Thomas Tuchel reportedly led the Serie A champions to cool their interest in the 28-year-old.

Now, La Gazzetta dello Sport - via Football Italia - claims that the powers-that-be at Inter have not closed the door fully on Lukaku, whose potential return to San Siro may be back on.

The report adds that Inter would only be willing to conclude a loan deal at this stage, though, and Chelsea remain under their transfer ban while Roman Abramovich is still in control of the club.

Lukaku left Inter after scoring 64 goals in 95 appearances for the Nerazzurri, and he has 12 strikes to his name from 36 appearances in a Chelsea shirt this season.

The former Manchester United man's contract at Chelsea does not expire until 2026.
