Manchester City have completed the signing of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips
After Erling Haaland and Stefan Ortega, the England international is Pep Guardiola's third signing of the summer transfer season. The England international midfielder will help fill the void left by Fernandinho's exit from Etihad Stadium as the 27-year-old was a priority target for City this summer following the departure of long-standing veteran and club captain Fernandinho.
After his Euro 2020 achievements, Phillips leaves Leeds as one of their modern legends, having helped the childhood club move from mid-table mediocrity in the Championship to the first division under Marcelo Bielsa. The Englishman was determined to sign with the Premier League champions and made sure that his team didn't waste the chance. Even offers from numerous other clubs to sign him were turned down by Phillips because he only wanted to play for the Citizens.
Phillips will initially cost Manchester City £42 million ($52 million), with Guardiola's team perhaps paying up to another £3 million ($3.7 million) in add-ons. Leeds, though, think that if all of the contract's terms are met, the agreement might end up costing more than £50 million ($61 million).
The acquisition of City's talented midfielder Darko Gyabi by Leeds in a separate transaction for $5 million ($6 million) has no influence on the deal for Phillips.
Phillips has committed to City for six years, keeping him a part of the Premier League champions through the summer of 2028.
According to reports, he will make roughly £150,000 per week at the Etihad Stadium, which, if true, would represent a big increase over his current income at Leeds.
The English international, who previously wore No. 23 for Leeds, will don No. 4 for the English champions.
Since Vincent Kompany, Man City's valiant former captain, left the team in 2019, he will be the first player to wear No. 4 for the team.
He said: “It is a good feeling to get everything sorted and I am officially a Manchester City player which I am really happy about. I think over the past few years at Leeds I have done really well and obviously got into the England squad and did really well there.
"I am very appreciative of what I have done at Leeds and everyone I have been around, so I just want to test myself in the next step with good players with an unbelievable work ethic and an unbelievable manager as well.”
"It’s one of the main reasons I wanted to come to City, to improve my game in loads of different ways"
“I am absolutely delighted to have joined Manchester City. They have again proved to be the best team in the country with an amazing squad and a manager in Guardiola who is rightly considered to be the finest in the world.
“To be able to play under Pep and learn from him and his coaching staff as well as be part of such a fantastic squad is a prospect that I am incredibly excited about.
“Man City are a world-class club with world-class staff and facilities and it’s a dream come true to have joined the club. Now I can’t wait to get started and to look to try and help the team to go on and achieve more success.”

The view from GOAL's Manchester City Correspondent, Jonathan Smith:
Man City are not standing still despite winning four Premier League titles in five years, and Phillips is another impressive signing following the capture of Erling Haaland.
