Paris Saint-Germain superstar Lionel Messi has said that he already has a ‘very good relationship with Kylian Mbappe, despite only being teammates for a couple of months.
Messi’s partnership with Mbappe and long-time friend Neymar has been billed as potentially one of the best-attacking tridents that football has ever seen, given the quality of the individuals.
It is still in the early days and Messi himself only has one goal and no assists to show for five appearances in PSG colours to date. But the 34-year-old insists it is ‘easy to play with Mbappe.
“Very good,” he said when asked about their relationship in the new issue of France Football.
“Honestly, with a player like him, it's easy to get along well. Kylian also speaks perfect Spanish, so we also have good exchanges off the pitch. It makes things simpler. Now, it's been a short time since I arrived, it is still a little early to draw any conclusions. But I'm sure it will work out well.”
Mbappe, whose contract at Parc des Princes expires at the end of this season, recently admitted that he wanted to leave PSG during the summer when Real Madrid was making offers.
PSG rejected bids, which Mbappe has questioned because he wanted the club to be able to pocket a substantial transfer fee instead of losing him as a free agent next year. But the French giants are still hopeful they can get him to change his mind and commit his future.
Messi has revealed that he didn’t feel he was in a position to try and join that fight to get Mbappe to stay during the summer because the two had only just met and didn’t know each other.
“Honestly, I had just arrived, I didn't know him well enough yet to go talk to him about this and give him my opinion,” the six-time Ballon d’Or winner explained.
“Like everyone else, I waited to see what was going to happen. But, in the end, he stayed with us and for me, it is a great joy. It is one more element in our favour to achieve our objectives.”
