A new era has begun at Newcastle United, following Mike Ashley's sale of the club to the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which has an estimated net worth of 434 billion euros. With that money the world will soon become the Magpies' oyster, as they have the funds to sign any player that they like.
As the richest club in the world, Newcastle fans will hope that they can begin to emulate the scenes seen in the popular film 'Goal' and book their place in the Champions League, although they will want to then build on that by becoming a contender to not only win the Premier League title but also the Champions League.
Newcastle fans will have to wait
There are expected to be many changes at St James' Park, with manager Steve Bruce, set to be given his marching orders and a new sporting director likely to come in, but there are still a few months to go until the transfer window opens.
Until then, Newcastle will have to hope that they are in a good enough position to then bring in a couple of players and then secure their place in the Premier League ahead of next season. It is next summer that we could see a lot of movement at Newcastle.
Where does Newcastle need to improve?
There are some existing players in the Newcastle squad that will likely still have a future at the club, such as Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron, Joe Willock, and Callum Wilson, but many members of the squad will soon be viewed as expendable.
Bringing in a top-class goalkeeper would be a good place to start, as well as an elite striker, given Wilson's injury history. An experienced center-back would go a long way, too. But a lot depends on who the next manager is, as they will have certain players in mind.
Some realistic options for Newcastle
As fantasizes about the possibilities at St James' Park some players will the last six months of their contract in January that could be available for a decent price.
The likes of Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba, and Ansu Fatiare likely beyond Newcastle's reach as they are not yet a Champions League club, but they might be able to entice some players from the next tier down.
Barcelona's financial struggles have been much discussed and they would surely find it difficult to turn down a decent-sized bid for Ousmane Dembele. The idea of Dembele and Saint-Maximin on the wings for Newcastle is an exciting prospect and would no doubt get the supporters off their seats.
Staying with the French connection, Newcastle could sign one of the continent's most promising holding midfielders in Boubacar Kamara from Marseille, who would certainly welcome a fee rather than watch the 21-year-old walk out the door for nothing.
Looking at the center-back position, there is an English player with plenty of Premier League experience that is in the last year of his contract: Burnley's James Tarkowski. He was linked with a move to West Ham last summer and could be a good option due to his knowledge of the English top flight.
